There was drama on Friday after mourners in East Kolwa, Kisumu county refused to let the burial of Ohangla musician, Abenny Jachiga to proceed in peace.

The angry mourners, according to reports seen by Opera News, stormed the grave site, filling it with soil and tree branches while wailing. The mourners are said to have been disappointed by lack ‘enough time’ given to them to mourn their much treasured musician.

Commotion started when the body of Bernard Onyango Obonyo, popularly known as Abenny Jachiga, was driven to Mowlem for burial on Friday morning. Police officers escorting the convoy had rough time controlling the crowd that had already formed, trying to block the procession until proper arrangements and enough mourning had been made.

Thousands of mourners who had trekked more than 20km to the artist’s home, braved heavy police presence to force their way into the compound, where they disrupted burial arrangements by proceeding to the graveside and covering it up with leaves and soil while wailing.

The drama comes just a day after thousands of mourners, on Thursday thronged Kisumu’s Port Florence Hospital in a move to try and view the body of the departed Ohangla maestro.

The mourners were however, forced to be locked out of the hospital, after emotions ran high forcing the management to call police as one way of controlling the commotion.

The mourners ended up clashing with the police on the Kisumu-Busia road after they were dispersed for bringing down hospital’s perimeter wall near the mortuary area.

Jachiga is reported to have succumbed after a short illness at St Jairus Private Hospital on Thursday. According to his brother, the musician had bee ailing since Friday, June 5, and was rushed to a local hospital before he was transferred to St. Elizabeth Hospital and finally to St. Jairus Hospital where he passed away on the morning of Thursday.
